Continuing our look at the most popular toys of each decade…from 1960 to today!

1960s – GI Joe!  First introduced as a male counterpart to the incredibly popular Barbie doll. GI Joe means “Government Issue Joe” which is what all US soldiers were referred to during WW2.

1970s – Star Wars Action figures!  Nobody knew that George Lucas’ epic “Star Wars” film would be so popular!  Nowadays, the original 1978 figures are worth up to £200,000 each!

1980s – Cabbage Patch Kids!  EVERYBODY wanted to ‘adopt’ a cabbage patch kid you know!  Parents took extreme steps to get them for thier kids, even resorting to fighting in stores…

1990s – Beanie Babies / Tickle Me Elmo!  There were two massive hits during the 1990s, beanie babies (squashy stuffed animals with cute names) anda stuffed version of the Sesame Street character, which giggles when squeezed.  Cue more fights in shops…

2000s – Wii consoles!  The Nintendo Wii was released in 2006 and shoppers waited for HOURS fior the Wii.  It was cheaper than competitors and offered a new way to play games in a more active way.
